Three new EU funded projects – one shared mission: Boosting Rural Circular Bioeconomy

In autumn 2026, three Interreg Baltic Sea Region projects – CircularFarmPlastics, Rural Symbiosis and BioGold – are launching with a shared mission: to boost circular bioeconomy in rural areas by turning side streams, residues and difficult waste streams into new value, stronger cooperation and practical business opportunities.
The BioBoosters Network is hosting an open launch webinar for three projects advancing the rural circular bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea Region: BioGold, CircularFarmPlastics and Rural Symbiosis. The event will introduce their activities and explore opportunities for cooperation with the project teams. The webinar is particularly relevant to farmers, biogas producers, rural businesses, waste collection and recycling companies, regional and local authorities, researchers, and business support organisations interested in practical circular bioeconomy solutions.
What is the BioBoosters Network?
BioBoosters Network connects regional innovation ecosystems across the Baltic Sea Region, bringing together businesses, universities, clusters and development organisations. Its demand-driven hackathon model matches companies’ circular transition challenges with expertise from SMEs, start-ups and research teams. Through open calls, mentoring and joint solution development, it helps participants build partnerships for testing and commercialisation. The original Interreg project addressed 18 company challenges across nine regions. The network continues this cooperation through new projects, networking and open innovation activities to turn rural resources into business opportunities.
Webinar on Boosting Rural Circular Bioeconomy
In the webinar on November 5, 2026, Project Manager Ida Norberg of BioFuel Region will present the project BioGold – Biogas by-products for circular opportunities. Connecting biogas producers, SMEs and support organisations, the project promotes better use of biofertiliser and biogenic CO₂. It addresses gaps in the knowledge needed to adopt existing solutions. Webinars, workshops and study visits will connectstakeholders with frontrunners and solution providers, with lessons compiled in a practical guide. The aim is stronger biogas value chains and more circular, profitable resource use in rural areas.
Project Manager, Bastian Hoffmann of the County Governor of Vestland will introduce CircularFarmPlastics – Circular Solutions for Farm Plastics in the Baltic Sea Region. It brings farmers, municipalities, businesses and policymakers together to improve agricultural plastics collection, reuse and recycling. Contamination, costly transport and inadequate collection services make these materials difficult to recover. Farmer-friendly training and guidance will support better handling and storage, while partners exchange experience of compactors, mobile collection, washing and pre-treatment systems, and viable logistics models. Policy dialogue will support more consistent practices across the region.
Svea Uusen of Pärnu County Development Centre will present Rural Symbiosis – Advancing Circularity in Rural Bioeconomy via Regional Symbiosis. The project helps regions turn agricultural and forestry side streams into new inputs, products and business opportunities. It addresses the dispersed, seasonal nature of rural biomass and the limited scale, logistics and cooperation available to small enterprises. Study visits, workshops and open innovation events will strengthen regional authorities’ and business support organisations’ capacity to connect producers with solution providers. A Rural Symbiosis Toolbox and regional roadmaps will support lasting cooperation.
