On 1 July 2026, Denmark will assume the Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), succeeding Estonia. EUSBSR is a transnational, multilevel cooperation framework of the eight EU member states bordering the Baltic Sea.

Guided by the Strategy’s three overall objectives to “Save the Sea”, “Connect the Region” and “Increase Prosperity” and standing on the shoulders of previous presidencies, Denmark’s Presidency of the National Coordinator’s Group will focus on ensuring a smooth and effective start to the implementation phase of the updated Action Plan for the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The updated Action Plan offers a shared framework for cooperation through which stakeholders across the Baltic Sea Region can contribute to our common objectives.

The newly updated Action Plan provides clear pathways for implementation under the Strategy’s 14 Policy Areas, and the aim will be to support Policy Areas in their ongoing work. The Presidency encourages Policy Areas to use the first implementation phase to prepare the ground for their Actions to be taken forward across the Baltic Sea Region, including by identifying relevant partners, funding opportunities and cooperation links with programmes, organisations and actors in the region. The Presidency will seek to keep these implementation conditions on the agenda of the National Coordinator’s Group.

The Presidency will also continue to focus on increased Ukrainian involvement in the Strategy where relevant. The Presidency encourages Policy Areas and Steering Groups to take Ukraine into account when planning their work and to consider relevant opportunities for involving Ukrainian actors in Actions and cooperation activities.

Over the next 12 months, Denmark will lead the work on overall strategic guidance, facilitation of decision-making and coordination of the National Coordinators Group, which is the core decision-making body within the governance structure of the Strategy, acting as its executive board. It consists of one National Coordinator from each of the nine contracting states.

The Danish Presidency of the Strategy will last until 30 June 2027.
