Shaping the future of the EU’s bioeconomy – together

The main directions of our society and environment are shaped at the EU level. There are opportunities for participation in the policy-making process, particularly through open consultations launched by the EU on upcoming policies. To ensure that future policies support sustainable living and benefit all regions, it is essential that policy-relevant results from projects are brought to the EU’s attention.

In May and June 2025, the EU opened a public consultation on its new Bioeconomy Strategy. This strategy aims among other goals to foster innovation and create mechanisms that help sustainable circular solutions reach the market.

EUSBSR coordinates Baltic Sea Region-wide inputs to the EU Bioeconomy Strategy

Across the Baltic Sea Region, numerous ambitious projects are currently developing solutions that are highly relevant to the future of both the EU’s and the region’s bioeconomy. These include, for example:

  • Circular solutions for gypsum that also reduce nutrient emissions from agriculture
  • Development and use of recycled fertilizers
  • Sustainable biogas production
  • Water reuse technologies

These solutions have been tested under the region-specific climate and environmental conditions. The lessons learnt, especially regarding remaining challenges and needs, are valuable for shaping EU policies that are more place-based, equitable, and ambitious.

To amplify these insights, Policy Area Nutri facilitated a collaborative effort to draft a joint statement from bioeconomy-relevant projects in the Baltic Sea Region. This initiative was launched with a workshop after the PA Nutri Talks on Nutrient Recycling in the Baltic Sea Region webinar on June 9, which was held as a partner event of the EU Green Week. The workshop was open to all interested stakeholders.

Policy messages from ongoing projects were collected and compiled into a PDF document. A summary text, based on the workshop discussions and submitted messages, was also prepared. Together, these materials formed a statement package that was submitted to the EU’s open consultation on the new Bioeconomy Strategy.

The policy impact of individual projects is improved when they present a unified voice. This type of cooperation results in a consolidated policy message that highlights the unique challenges of our region. Feedback from participants clearly indicated that such joint efforts are both welcomed and needed. Keep your eye out for the upcoming events and calls to action organised by Policy Areas for possibilities to enhance your project’s policy impact!
