Nautical Mail – Policy Area Ship News

It is the time of the year, when our projects are celebrating their Mid-Term achievements! Let’s hear their updates:

OpenRisk II

Mid-term conference coming up! Join the event to discover how the project has improved maritime risk management in the Baltic Sea region by developing practical and user-friendly tools: contact Anneliis at the University of Tartu by emailing anneliis.koivupuu (at) ut.ee. Note that the deadline for registrations is 11.03.2025!

Blue Supply Chains

The Blue Supply Chains project supports port authorities and port operators to decarbonise port operations by advancing electrification, providing alternative fuels strategies and setting up green transport chains.

  • Join the Blue Supply Chains workshop “Ports – Sustainable and Secure Energy Hubs in an Evolving Transport Landscape” during the Blue Mission BANOS 4th MISSION ARENA in Sopot, Poland on 28-30 April 2025. Read more and register here!
  • A set of deliverables has been published on our website:
    • Role of Port Authorities in green port operation activities
    • Role of Port Authorities in green energy supply for transports chains
    • Role of Port Authorities in the set-up of green transport chains
    • Greening Potentials for CT Terminals – Catalogue of European Projects

Over the course of 2.5 days, participants will have the opportunity to exchange on all aspects of the blue economy.

The event will culminate in the co-creation of a roadmap guiding the region toward achieving the goals of EU Mission Oceans & Waters. More information available soon in this page.

H2Derivatives@BalticSeaPorts

What happens when ports, energy providers, and innovators from seven countries join forces? A bold vision for sustainable maritime fuels takes shape!

Port of Hamburg Marketing is leading the Interreg project, H2-Derivatives@BalticSeaPorts (H2Deri@BSP). This ambitious initiative will enable ports across the Baltic Sea Region to adopt hydrogen-based derivatives – like methanol and ammonia – as viable alternatives to fossil fuels.

Why does this matter? The shipping industry faces a pivotal challenge: transitioning to low- or zero-carbon fuels while ensuring safe, efficient operations. H2Deri@BSP bridges knowledge and operational gaps, setting the stage for a cleaner, greener future in maritime transport.

The Kick-Off Meeting is held in March in Hamburg. Stay tuned and get involved!

REISFER

The REISFER project is organising its first of three annual conferences – The Island Ferry Summit. It will be taking place in Helsinki (Clarion Hotel, Tyynenmerenkatu 2) on 20 March 2025. The Summit focuses on ferry governance structures in the Central Baltic region and also features the preliminary results of the project. Summit programme and registration can be found here.

Sustainable Flow

Sustainable Flow, a project co-funded by the Central Baltic programme, has ambitious goals: by the end of May 2026, project’s seven pilot ports have reduced their CO2 emissions by 10%. To achieve this, the project is developing a digital tool for CO2 emissions calculations and a guidance tool to assist organisations make informed decisions on their energy saving and energy efficiency measures.
