BackGood practice from Latvia featured in Interreg Europe’s podcast
Thanks to inspiration from an Interreg Europe project, officials in Saulkrasti, Latvia, organised a summer camp for Ukrainian refugee to children to connect with locals. The experience was recently focused on Interreg Europe’s podcast.
When Russia’s war against Ukraine began in 2022, the Saulkrasti Municipality welcomed Ukrainian families, including children who had arrived without their parents.
Local authorities and schools had to respond quickly, often without previous experience of supporting children displaced by war. They knew they needed to create safe, meaningful and inclusive activities, but where to start?
The answer came through interregional cooperation.
As part of the Interreg Europe project SIRM, representatives from Saulkrasti took part in a study visit to Rzeszów, Poland, in July 2023. They discovered initiatives combining language learning, creative activities, sport, cultural exchange and emotional support for refugee children and families.
